25 September 2010 (Easy Adventure)Gila National Forest Camping Trip

We will meet at 0900 and head towards Hillsboro going west on I-10 to I-25 North to NM 152 West. Go through Hillsboro, Kingston, and Emory Pass scenic vista (which is worth a stop). The campground is about 15 miles past the Emory Pass scenic vista. This is primitive camping - be prepared, it will be cold at night around 40 degrees! The Gila National Forest is a place to enjoy the region's natural beauty and walk in the footsteps of prehistoric Indians, Apache, and early European settlers, miners, and explorers. It is a place for exploration, relaxation, and discovery to be visited time and time again. The campsite might get some nightly visits from animals so we need to keep the area clean of any leftover food. There is a creek running through the campsite but it could be dry, it could have 12 inches of water or 3 feet of water so bring your shorts for a quick dip in the water. The weather is a lot different in the Gila’s, in June 2010 it was 105 in El Paso and in the Gila’s 55 at night so bring your Jackets and a warm sleeping bag because the night time temps will be in the 40’s. This is more of a camping trip then an off-road trip so bring the kids and a 4x4 with good ground clearance. The trail getting to the campsite is tight and has brush on both sides and your vehicle could rub up against the brush so if you’re concerned about the paint bring a different vehicle. This campsite is primitive no drinking water or toilets so be prepared and bring everything you need for one overnighter. Meeting: Shell Gas Station located at the bottom of Transmountain & I-10 on El Paso Westside Time: 0900 am Return: 1400 Sunday 26 Sept
